If there’s one amenity that can instantly upgrade a ski vacation, it’s ski-in ski-out access. Instead of driving in snowy conditions, searching for a parking spot and hauling your gear to the base area, you’ll be skiing out the door and onto the lifts, allowing you to maximize your time on the mountain. If you’re looking to stay on the mountain, these are the best ski-in/ski-out resorts in the country.
Deer Valley Resort knows how to pamper skiers; snowboarding isn’t allowed, giving skiers free rein over the 2,000 acres of meticulously groomed terrain. The mountain also boasts some of the nation’s most luxurious ski-in/ski-out accommodations, including the Stein Eriksen Lodge, Montage Deer Valley and the St. Regis Deer Valley. Expect amenities like year-round heated outdoor swimming pools, full-service spas and stellar mountain views.
After skiing back to your hotel at the end of a day on the slopes, head to lively Park City. Less than two miles away from the resort, the town offers a lively restaurant scene and many cultural offerings.
Skiers hitting the slopes at Beaver Creek Resort in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains can choose to stay at the base or mid-mountain. Guests at The Osprey, situated in Beaver Creek’s pedestrian village, can literally walk out the door and onto the Strawberry Park Express Lift. (The Osprey is the closest hotel to a chairlift in North America.) Other options include the mid-mountain Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch or the Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa in Avon.
The mountain itself caters largely to intermediate skiers, though there’s something for everyone amid the 1,800 skiable acres.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming has more than 4,000 feet of vertical rise and some of the best steeps on the continent. And several hotel choices allow skiers to maximize their time on the slopes.
The Four Seasons Resort is the only Teton Village hotel with true ski-in/ski-out access. It sits just a few steps from the Bridger and Sweetwater Gondola. The Snake River Lodge & Spa, Alpenhof Lodge and Caldera House are all a short walk from the Bridger Center lifts. No matter where you’re staying, don’t miss the lively après-ski scene at the Mangy Moose next to the Village Commons.
Visitors to Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont only have one ski-in/ski-out resort option ( The Lodge at Spruce Peak next to the Over Easy Gondola). But the Village has plenty of slope-side vacation rentals providing convenient access to runs on Vermont’s highest peaks.
Between Mt. Mansfield and Spruce Peak, skiers have 116 trails to choose from. A majority of the runs are suitable for beginners and intermediates.
Northstar California Resort in North Lake Tahoe makes its home on an extinct volcano. Mount Pluto boasts 3,170 skiable acres and the largest snowmaking system in the North Lake Tahoe Area.
The resort also has some of the best ski-in/ski-out lodging options. The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe and Northstar Lodge by Welk Resorts sit at either end of the Highlands Gondola, with the former mid-mountain next to the Big Easy chairlift. A smattering of mid-mountain condos feature amenities like private decks, fire pits and hot tubs, right on the slopes.
The base area at Taos Ski Valley gives skiers plenty of choices for sleeping slope-side, from condominiums and private chalets to luxury resorts. Families can stay at the Edelweiss Lodge and Spa on the slopes of Strawberry Hill for direct access to the ski school (one of the best in the country). The Blake, one of the newest hotels in town, is adjacent to Lift 1, while the Hotel St. Bernard sits next to the new high speed quad.
