Located above the waters of Flathead Lake, Blacktail Mountain Ski Area is a small alpine resort in northwest Montana with about 1,000 skiable acres and a summit elevation of 6,780 feet.
Open Wednesday to Sunday, Blacktail Mountain offers a local feel that you won’t find at the state’s larger resorts, like Big Sky.
Spectacular views and solid snowfall can be found at this ski area that caters predominantly to intermediate skiers and boarders. The area does have a snow sports school that offers private and group lessons at affordable prices, as well as a rental shop. There is a terrain park and cross-country trails here, though no night skiing.
Blacktail Mountain has slope-side dining options at their day lodge, which also houses the rental shop as well as the Blacktail Trading Company retail store. Hotels can be found in nearby Bigfork, Kalispell and the Flathead Lake area.
Blacktail Mountain generally opens by early December and closes at the beginning of April. While February is typically known as being a solid snow month in Montana, this can stretch into March, when guests will also enjoy longer days and warmer temperatures, especially towards the end of the season.
