Based near the Continental Divide 22 miles northwest of Montana’s capital city, Helena, the Great Divide Ski Area is known for being the first ski area to open in the state each year and for its relatively affordable lift tickets.
The ski area has just over 60 trails across its 1,600 acres with six lifts, including a beginner tow, and six terrain parks.
The ski area is only open from Wednesday to Sunday, with the exception of some holidays, but you can make up time while night skiing until 10 p.m. There is a rental shop on the mountain, and rentals secured online before 8 a.m. on the day of arrival are cheaper than renting at the counter. There is also a discounted rate for rentals after 4 p.m. for night skiing. Private and group lessons are available through the Ski & Snowboard School.
While there is no slope-side lodging – a range of accommodation can be found in nearby Helena – there is a day base lodge that has soup, burgers and barbecue, while the Missing Lynx Saloon provides beer and cocktails.
The Great Divide Ski Area generally opens its slopes in mid-November, with the best snow occurring in February and March. The ski area is also known for its sunny conditions – a draw for many, though it means a lower annual snowfall. Keep an eye on their website for the latest snow reports. Even though Great Divide Ski Area is close to Helena, the ski area rarely has the crowds that other larger resorts would have through the season.
