Why should you visit Soldier Mountain Ski Area

Soldier Mountain Ski Area in south-central Idaho has always been individually owned – it belonged to actor Bruce Willis for 20 years – and visitors keep coming back for its friendly atmosphere.

What’s more, Soldier Mountain’s 1,150 acres of skiable terrain cater to skiers and boarders of all skill levels.

Beginners can hone their skills at Soldier Mountain’s Ski and Ride School, which offers private lessons or group classes. More experienced skiers can take advantage of the resort’s 2,000 acres of backcountry terrain and available CAT skiing, including to Smoky Dome, the highest peak in the Soldier Mountains.

Soldier Mountain generally opens in mid-December and remains open through March, when the resort often sees heavy snowfall Solder Mountain operates Thursday-Sunday, but during the week of Christmas, the resort operates daily.

Where to stay

There are no ski-in/ski-out hotels at Soldier Mountain, but, if you are looking to stay close to the ski area, there is Pioneer Campground , a developed campground just two minutes from the resort. Make the Killdeer Kottage , a lovely three-bedroom cottage, your home away from home, equipped with a kitchen and a living room, and located just 20 minutes from Soldier Mountain. Located on the Camas Prairie is the quaint and cozy Prairie Inn , offering guests reasonably priced room rates and beautiful views.

Where to eat

If you’re looking to refuel while on the slopes, you can find homemade burgers, chili and other snacks at the resort lodge. For more options, head 20 minutes outside of the resort to Soldier Road, located in the town of Fairfield. Here, you will find Soldier Creek Brewing Co. serving sandwiches, soups and salads. On that same main drag is Jim Dandy’s if you are looking for pizza and ribs, or The Cliff Bar and Grille if you’re craving wings.

How to get there

There are three airports that service Soldier Mountain. Camas County Airport is just 20 minutes from the resort; Soldier Field Airport is about 30 minutes away; and Friedman Memorial Airport is about an hour away. It is recommended to rent a car during your trip.
