Located in eastern Arizona on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, the Sunrise Peak Resort sits on the Colorado Plateau and includes three peaks – Sunrise, Cyclone and Apache.
The 800-acre ski area has a summit elevation of 11,100 feet, with a vertical drop of 1,900 feet. The resort is known for its alpine skiing that draws expert and intermediate skiers.
There is night skiing offered at the resort, as well as cross-country trails for those who would like to opt for Nordic skiing. Sunrise Peak has a ski and snowboard school – private lessons are offered to ages 3 and up – and three rental shops. There is a tubing hill here and slope-side dining, though no ski-in/ski-out lodging – there are several hotels and lodging options within a 10-mile radius of the resort.
The resort generally opens in late November and closes in late March. Some report the best snow in January and early February, while later in the season can be wet, as is typical in the Southwest ski areas. As always, avoid the holidays and weekends for shorter lift lines and less crowding on the slopes.
