When it comes to skiing and snowboarding, West Virginia may not receive as much attention as Vermont or New Hampshire. But there’s a reason why they call it the Mountain State. West Virginia sits at the heart of the Appalachian Mountain range. And come winter, its rolling, forested landscape becomes blanketed by pristine powder.
West Virginia’s ski resorts can be found along the state’s eastern edge in the Allegheny and Cumberland ranges. While not as large as resorts found out west, West Virginia ski resorts have a local feel and cater to all skill levels.

The state’s largest ski area (and the largest ski resort in the mid-Atlantic) comprises two mountains with nearly 260 acres of skiable terrain and 60 marked trails accessed by 14 lifts. The resort’s trails are fairly evenly split between beginner, intermediate and advanced. Snowshoe Mountain also has three freestyle terrain trails and one glade area, as well as space for snowboarders. And once you finish on the slopes, take advantage of the amenities of Snowshoe Mountain’s village, the best après scene in the state.

A favorite among West Virginians, Timberline Mountain has been serving Mountain State powder hounds since the early 1980s. Following bankruptcy in 2019, it was unclear whether Timberline Mountain could survive. But now, the resort is back in action, with two new chairlifts and upgrades to the snow making system. Half of the resort’s 22 runs are designed with beginners in mind, but more advanced skiers will find trails that challenge their skills. Plus, sunset doesn’t mark the end of the day thanks to the resort’s night-skiing offerings. Timberline Mountain also has a terrain park for snowboarders.

Known for its family-friendliness, Canaan Valley Resort boasts long, gentle runs designed specifically for beginner and intermediate skiers. Meanwhile, activities like ice skating and snow tubing are sure to keep the kids occupied when they need a break from the slopes. What’s more, children ages five and under can ski for free. And just because Canaan Valley caters to families doesn’t mean more advanced powder hounds are overlooked. Forty-four percent of the resort’s 47 marked trails are designated advanced or expert. Plan to visit in January for the highest chances of fresh natural powder.

Winterplace may be small, but it doesn’t lack in amenities. This West Virginia ski area encompasses around 90 skiable acres, 100 percent of which is covered by snow making so you’re guaranteed optimal conditions. Winterplace is fairly evenly divided between beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain. What’s more, 26 of the 27 marked trails are open for night skiing throughout the season. Winterplace also boasts a terrain park for snowboarders. And when the family tires of the slopes, head to Winterplace’s snow tubing park, the largest in the state with two magic carpets and 14 lanes.
