Stand at the summit of Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, New York, on a clear day and you can see all the way to Canada.
The fifth-largest mountain in New York also boasts 360-degree views of the Adirondacks and the most challenging ski slopes in the Northeast: the double-black diamond hike-to terrain known as “The Slides”.
Whiteface certainly provides a challenge for the expert riders, but that doesn’t mean that beginners can’t enjoy the resort. If you are just starting out, you will want to make your way to Bear Den Mountain, a separate area where the slopes are less extreme. Lessons are also provided on the mountain if you are looking to improve your skiing abilities.
Whiteface Mountain generally opens for operation around mid-November, and remains open until April. Be aware that the amount of snowfall is not guaranteed during the early and late season.
